After Hair Transplant Care: What You Should Know
After a hair transplant, care is just as important as the surgery itself. Proper post-transplant care helps transplanted grafts settle, heal, and grow into natural, permanent hair. Patients who follow aftercare guidelines carefully see faster recovery and more natural results.

After Hair Transplant Care:
The First 10 Days, Most Critical Period
- Washing: Avoid washing your hair for the first 7 days. Gentle washing with mild shampoo can begin after Day 7.
- Sleeping position: Sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated. Avoid side or face-down positions, as these may damage the grafts.
- Helmets or tight hats: Avoid using helmets or tight caps. A loose, breathable cap may be worn if necessary.
- Smoking and alcohol: Avoid both for at least 10 days. Smoking in the first 3 days significantly reduces graft survival.
- Sexual activity: Wait at least 10 days.
The First 2 Weeks: Gentle Protection
- Exercise: Light walking is generally safe, but avoid running, heavy lifting, or participating in intense sports.
- Dusty environments: Avoid construction sites, factories, or any dusty areas.
- Topical treatments: Minoxidil may be used after 2 weeks, but only if prescribed by your doctor.
- Sun exposure: Direct sunlight should be avoided completely for the first 2 weeks.
After 1 Month
- Swimming: Pools and the sea should be avoided for at least 1 month.
- Sauna and steam baths: Wait at least 1 month.
- Sports: Heavy workouts may resume after 1 month.
- Styling products: Avoid gels, sprays, or wax for 1 month. For non-transplanted hair, light use may be allowed after 2 weeks.
After Hair Transplant Care: 3–6 Months
- Hair dryer:
- 0–3 weeks: None
- After 3 weeks: Cold air only
- After 2 months: Normal use is safe
- Hair styling products:
- Donor area: From 1 month
- Non-transplanted hair: From 2 weeks
- Transplanted area: After 6 months
- Hair straightener/flat iron: Safe from 3 months onward
- Haircut:
- Donor area: From 10 days with scissors
- Transplant area: From 3 months
- Hair dye: Wait at least 6 weeks to several months; safest after 6 months
- Scalp micropigmentation or wigs: Usually safe after 6 months
- Second hair transplant session: Not before 6 months, often planned after 12 months
Sun Protection Is Essential
The sun can slow healing and damage grafts. Avoid direct sun exposure for the first 2 weeks. After that, always use a loose protective cap outdoors. Sunscreen (SPF 30+) may be applied after grafts have fully healed, usually after 2 weeks.
